Scent Solutions: Easy Ways to Naturally Freshen Up Your Home

Our homes are our sanctuaries, and nothing sets the mood better than a pleasant and inviting scent.

Over time, we can become “nose blind” to the smells around us, which is why it’s important to give our homes a refreshing aroma now and then.

Whether you’re preparing to sell your home or simply looking to create a more inviting atmosphere, this blog will provide you with a variety of methods to scent your home naturally that will create a beautiful and refreshing scent to cover all areas of your home.

Natural Scents

a. Simmer Fresh Herbs and Citrus Fruit on the Stove: Simmer pots are the latest craze but it’s easy to do and it works! Create a delightful aroma by simmering a pot of water, fresh herbs, citrus slices, a drop of vanilla extract and peppercorns.

This method releases refreshing scents throughout your home. Who doesn’t want a home to smell like William Sonoma?

It’s a fun and easy way when selling your home to create that warm and inviting feel or when you simply want to freshen up your home.

Here is my fav recipe for spring:

5 sprigs of fresh thyme

3 slices of pink grapefruit

1 lemon cut into slices

1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract

1 teaspoon of 5-pepper blend peppercorns

8 cups of water

In a Dutch oven or a stock pot, combine the ingredients and pour the water over the ingredients, cover and bring to a simmer over low heat. Continue to simmer, uncovered, for up to 2 hours.

    b. Fragrant Indoor Houseplants: Plants have air-purifying properties, but many also emit pleasant fragrances in your home.

Consider adding plants like lavender, eucalyptus, or jasmine to bring a natural scent to your living space. Make sure it’s pet friendly before bringing any plants into your home if you have furry friends.

    Candles and Diffusers

    a. Choose Natural Wax Candles: opt for candles made from soy or beeswax, which are free from synthetic fragrances and emit a cleaner scent compared to petroleum-based candles.

    b. Essential Oil Diffusers: Use a diffuser to disperse natural essential oils like lavender, lemongrass, or peppermint into the air, providing a soothing and uplifting atmosphere.

    c. Reed Diffuser: This is another easy way to add a subtle scent to your living space.

Just remember less is more when it comes to using these methods.

    Let Fresh Air In

Open Up Your Windows: By opening up your windows and letting fresh air in, you can rejuvenate your living space, remove stagnant odours, and create a more vibrant and inviting atmosphere.

Embrace the natural elements and the rejuvenating effects of a gentle breeze to enhance the ambiance of your home.

Choose a time when the air outside is at its freshest, such as early morning or late evening, to let in the coolness and fragrance of the surroundings.

Remember to close your windows before the heat of the day sets in or when there is any evidence of smog. You do not want to undo all of the freshness that you’ve put into your home.

To maximize the effect, open windows on opposite sides of your home to create cross ventilation, allowing a gentle breeze to flow through and carry away stale air.

Ensure the safety of your home by using window screens to prevent any accidents.

    a. Drawer and Closet Freshness: Slip dryer sheets into drawers or hang them in closets to give your clothes a pleasant fragrance.

This trick can be used for any storage boxes such as ottomans, chests, and baskets to remove any stagnant odour too.

      b. Furniture and Upholstery: Lightly rub dryer sheets on furniture and upholstery to eliminate odours and leave a subtle scent. It also removes pet hair and static electricity charged by your electronics in the home.

      Carpet and Rug Freshening

      a. Baking Soda Carpet Powder: Sprinkle baking soda liberally on carpets and rugs, let it sit for a few hours, then vacuum it up to remove odours and refresh the fibres.

      b. DIY Room Sprays: Mix 2 cups of water with 20-30 drops of your favourite essential oil (lemon and lavender are great choices) and 2 tablespoons of Baking Soda. Mix well. Then use a funnel to place in a spray bottle.

Lightly mist carpets and rugs to give them a pleasant scent. You can also use it as an air freshener.  It’s easy to do, inexpensive and it works!

If you have pets, make sure you use essential oils that are pet friendly. Consult your vet to ensure you use the right ones for your furry friends.
